If you are interested in making pottery, you can go about it in a couple different ways. Most people will find lessons in their area, which is nice because it allows you to get direction while learning the skill. It is also nice because it makes it so that you don't have to worry about cleaning up a mess or getting a lot of supplies. Others decide to set up a shop in their home or garage. This is an all right option if you are committed, but you have to invest in all the supplies.
The best option for those that are interested in making pottery is getting used equipment. You can even get a used kiln for less than $100 in perfect working condition. They have miniature models too, so you won't have to worry about limited space. That way, you won't have to worry about finding lessons or driving to them. You are much more likely to become proficient at making fantastic vases and bowls than you would be if you could only do it a couple times each week.
The reason that you do not need to pay for lessons is because of the fact that pottery is a skill that you learn by practicing. People can teach you the right and wrong way to do it all day long, but your first pot is still going to come out looking weird. Since that is the case, why not do it from the comfort of your own home? By your second or third pot, you will be blown away at what you can design and you will not be paying a monthly fee. Believe it or not, this is how people become truly proficient with pottery and ceramics.
So while it can be nice to invest in lessons, if you really want to be making pottery quickly, you should teach yourself. The amount of experience that you get from making your first bowl will be worth the amount of money that you would pay for a couple month's worth of lessons. The only thing you need to do is worry about getting the supplies for very cheap.
